Organic micas are naturally formed minerals. There are numerous variation and types of micas that are found across the world. Pearlescent pigments are broadly used in the cosmetic industry to produce sparkle, luster, and color-flop properties among others. These products are used in various applications including lipstick, nail polish, eye shadow, and blush.
Cosmetic micas are comprised of potassium aluminum silicate dihydrate. Silicates, similar to silica, are based on interconnected SiO4 tetrahedra. In silicates, however, the ratio of Si is greater than that of O, producing silicone-oxygen anions. Mica pigments have particle size restrictions; when used around the eyes, particle size should not exceed 150 microns.
